Typically, for tunable multi-spectral LED displays, different light colors and luminance correspond to different energy consumption, but the exact relationships are not clear. This study investigates the energy consumption of LED displays under a series of spectral settings.
To tackle this issue, we propose an energy monitoring method by mapping the spectral power distribution (SPD) of LED displays and energy consumption. This method accurately reflects the spectral conditions of LED display screens under different colors and relative luminance.
This work provides a convenient and non-destructive method for measuring the energy consumption of LED displays, significantly reducing facility management costs in urban commercial districts with numerous displays, and thereby facilitating a balance between urban development and environmental monitoring.
As shown in Fig. S4, an analysis of the grayscale distribution in different images reveals that for images 5 and 12, the grayscale are predominantly concentrated in the first half, causing the energy consumption estimates to be lower than the measured values.
To address the inconsistency of energy consumption estimation of different colors, we established a characteristic curve Q (λ), which was fitted with the CIE 1931 color matching functions. The characteristic values of different colors are linear with their corresponding display power.
Energy consumption is then obtained from the curve based on the grayscale of each pixel in the image. Due to minor discrepancies between the fitted curve and the measured values, the curve shows lower values than the measured results in the first half and higher values in the latter half.
